Jonathan was born in 1980 in Jerusalem, but moved to the quiet Dutch countryside at three months old. Around the turn of the millennium he moved to Amsterdam, where he studied philosophy, political science, economics, and film and television studies in more or less random order, which yielded him dinner conversation level knowledge of almost everything and some wonderful friends.

In 2007 he decided to pursue film, and he was lucky enough to be accepted at the Dutch Film Academy, where he graduated as a director in 2011. In the years following graduation, he worked consecutively and simultaneously as a a waiter and bartender, a filmmaker and screenwriter, and a copywriter and creative. Since 2018 he has also been teaching film, with a focus on storytelling for both fiction and documentary. After making several short films in the last few years, today Jonathan lives in Madrid, where he is working on several feature scripts, a comedy series and a play.

Jonathan likes to work by first asking questions and exploring a topic from many angles, to then find the form in which what needs to be told can be best expressed. He has discovered that in this regard fiction and non-fiction are not very different: both are about finding an internal logic where the various parts of a story or argument interconnect and work towards an inevitable conclusion.

Although his interests can’t be easily categorized into a genre or type of stories, when he’s had a few drinks there’s a solid chance Jonathan will try to explain to you how he’s utterly mystified by the human condition. By this he probably refers both to his wonder at the strangeness and confusion of being a conscious being, and his inability to remember to file his tax-report in time.

Either way, Jonathan strongly believes that to move us, stories need to be connected to the inner life of the author. However, he has come to understand that this connection cannot be premeditated: a process of digging for the meaning in one’s intuitive ideas is required. Finally, it should be noted Jonathan’s favourite vegetables all start with the letter A, except cauliflower, which, as many know, begins with a C.
